The closed loop: Redwood Leasing, both sides

Follow a fictional company that sells and buys: what its Sell plan sends to dealers, what its Buy plan finds in other sellers' stock, and where the loop shows up in the Market tab, the Marketplace and the notices.

TL;DRAI summary

This chapter explains how Redwood Leasing, a fictional company, both buys and sells vehicles on Cypress. You'll see how Redwood's planned sales show up to other dealers, and how its buying needs are met by other sellers, all while keeping company names private.

Dive deeper:

For: Companies that sell and buy (fleet managers, org admins) · Cypress Managers acting for one

Redwood Leasing is a fictional company used in these examples, and the one that does both. It sells vehicles and buys them, so it sits on both ends of the loop: its supply meets other dealers' demand, and its demand meets other sellers' supply. This walkthrough follows it through both plans and shows where each side reaches the other.

Before you start

  • The example is dated in Q4 2026, the quarter in progress. Yours follows the quarter you are in.
  • Planning has two switches, one for each plan, and Redwood has both on, so the Sell plan and the Buy plan sit behind the switch beside the page title. See Switch Planning on for a customer.
  • What Redwood sees of other companies is always a count, a range or a model name. That is the point of the loop, and the guide says so where it matters.

What Redwood holds

SideIn this example
SellA goal of 10 vehicles this quarter. Live in Sell: a 2023 Toyota RAV4 XLE and a 2022 Jeep Wrangler Sport. Planned in windows: three Chevrolet Equinox LT and four Hyundai Santa Fe. Last quarter it sold 13 against a goal of 12.
BuyA goal of 2 vehicles and no budget. One target, Wrangler Sport, 2021 to 2023, on the Balanced track, with a target price of $30,000 and a maximum of $33,000.

Steps

Open Planning. With the switch beside the title on Sell plan, open the Schedule tab and find the Equinox LT and Santa Fe rows. Look for the violet dot that marks planned demand on a cell.

You should see no violet dot on either lot. Summit Auto Group has an Equinox LT target, and no company has a Santa Fe target. One dealer is below the minimum of two companies, so Cypress shows a seller nothing at all for the Equinox, which is the privacy rule doing its work. For a lot with a dot, see A selling quarter: Northwind Fleet.

The Equinox LT row with no violet dot: one dealer is below the minimum

Open the Market tab. What dealers want lists models that other companies plan, search for, save or make offers on, for example Chevrolet Colorado, Toyota Highlander, Hyundai Elantra and Honda Accord, with the chip Wanted on Cypress and no count. The Equinox, the RAV4 and the Santa Fe are not there, because Redwood holds them: Models you hold show their dealer demand on your lots, in Planning. What sellers plan to bring shows Hyundai Santa Fe with a range, 10–19, because three other sellers plan four each and Redwood's own four never count, and Subaru Outback as under 10.

Select See live listings on a row to open the Marketplace narrowed to that make and model.

You should see what the market is saying without a name in it. This is the board that every company reads, and it is the same board on the Buy plan.

The Market tab: what dealers want, with no names in it

Switch to the Buy plan. The header counts one open target. Open the Targets tab and select Wrangler Sport. Its track is Balanced: it shows matches from 90% and offers near market value, never below the target or above the maximum. Under Live matches, a 2022 Jeep Wrangler Sport from Northwind Fleet is an exact match (other Wranglers on Cypress may be listed too). Redwood's own Wrangler Sport is not in the list: a company's own vehicles, and its stores', never match its targets.

You should see one match, with Sequoia would offer about … under it, or Buy at the ask when the listing asks less than Sequoia would pay. Select Buy analysis on the row for the four blocks. See A buying quarter: Summit Auto Group.

Redwood's Wrangler Sport target and its match

Open the Marketplace. The strip reads Your Q4 plan, with 0 of 2 bought and the count of listings that fit. Open Northwind's Wrangler: the line under the title reads Fits your target Wrangler Sport (100%) with Open target, followed by the price guide and Sequoia's offer line. Redwood's own Wrangler, listed by Redwood, has no such line when Redwood looks at it.

You should see the plan reaching into the Marketplace, on one side, while the same Wrangler is, on Northwind's side, an ordinary listing: Northwind never learns whose plan it fits. See Planning inside remarketing.

Northwind's Wrangler: the plan line says it fits Redwood's target

Look at the rail's Next weeks section on the Buy plan, and at Coming to market on the Plan tab. Planned supply is shown only when at least two sellers plan the same kind of vehicle. No one plans a Wrangler in this example, so Redwood's target shows nothing coming. That is accurate, and it is a state worth knowing: nothing planned that we can show does not mean the market is quiet.

Redwood's own supply shows up on the other side. Sign in as Summit Auto Group and open its Equinox LT target. Two sellers plan Equinoxes, Northwind Fleet and Redwood Leasing, so Summit's rail shows a range under Next weeks. Summit sees the range and never learns that Redwood is one of the two.

You should see the loop from both ends: Redwood's three Equinoxes are in the range Summit reads, and Summit's Equinox target is a single dealer that Redwood is not allowed to see.

Summit's rail: the Next weeks range that includes Redwood's Equinoxes, with no name

Last, think about how Redwood hears about its Wrangler. The target is Balanced and not marked High priority, so there is no Instant alerts notice for it: the match arrives in the Daily summary email, every morning around 8 AM Eastern when there is something new. Turn on High priority in the target's editor and a Balanced target alerts within the hour. Both notices are set under Markets and notices.

You should see the hint beside the High priority box read Alerts instantly when on, because the target is Balanced; on an Aggressive target it would read Always alerts instantly, and on a Conservative one Daily summary only.

What happens next

Redwood's goal of 2 vehicles is a plan, not a purchase: Sequoia never sends an offer, so the Wrangler becomes Redwood's only when Redwood makes the offer in the Marketplace, and counts toward the target when the closing starts. Its Sell goal of 10 moves as the windows run, are handed to Sell and sell.
