What a car is worth, and when to sell it

Ask what a car is worth: a value with how sure it is and a year of how it falls; then, for a car of your fleet, one answer to sell or hold, what waiting costs in dollars, and the next step that fits.

TL;DRAI summary

This chapter shows you how to find out a car’s estimated market value and whether you should sell it now or hold onto it. It also helps you plan when to sell cars for the best outcome.

A value, Sell or hold, and Plan it for Cedar's window

Steps

Ask about any car. "What is the Tucson worth, and when should I sell it?" The Value card gives a range to a dealer with how sure it is, and where it comes from: Black Book, Cypress's own sales, or the market. Under it, a year of the car's value on Cypress's depreciation curve for its class, and what waiting costs a month. With the VIN and the condition, Cedar can look the exact car up. A car that is not in your fleet yet: Add it to my fleet.

Sell or hold: one answer. For a car of your fleet, the Sell or hold card gives one verdict. When the car is in your plan, it is Sequoia's, Cypress's planning engine: Sell now or Hold, with its reason, weighing what the car earns against what it costs, and what waiting costs in dollars ("Waiting 3 months costs about $1,800: $400 in value and $1,400 to run it."). A car not in your plan gets Cypress's value curve for its class instead.

The next step that fits. A car in use: Plan it for a sale window, with Cedar's pick first and the others beside it; the plan hands it to selling when the window opens, and nothing is listed now. A draft or a car in review: Get it live opens its Get it live card. Rather keep it? Keep it, and Cedar looks again for you.

Without Planning, the card says what Cypress cannot know (what the car earns or costs you each month) and offers Ask for Planning.

Keep watching

The journey's playbook is the Sell or hold watch: when you keep a car, Cedar looks again when its next sale window opens, or every two weeks, and says in the card when it is time to sell. If it is off, keeping a car asks Keep watching this for me?
